The Swiss Family Robinson is a novel first published in 1812, about the wreck of a ship carrying a Swiss family on its way to Port Jackson, Australia.

When the story was written by the Swiss priest Johann David Weiss and edited by his son Johann Rudolf Weiss, it was intended to teach his four children about family values, good stewardship of resources, the benefits of the natural world, and self-reliance. The adventures were presented as a series of lessons in natural history and natural sciences in the style of other similar educational books written for children of the period.
