Europe fell with wounds after the great Napoleonic wars. It saw no difference between a vanquished and a victor. The battles consumed the flower of the continent’s youth, and left the rest with spiritual and psychological wounds that are difficult to heal. The greatest pain was suffered by the youth of France, whose souls soared to the peaks of what they thought was the glory of the homeland, and who were intoxicated by successive victories, only to wake up one morning to a hideous defeat that fell upon them from above, and marked their souls. With anxiety and confusion, it filled their souls with doubts about life and its usefulness, shaking their faith in everything. The hero of our novel, Octave, was one of these young men. His first emotional experience did not provide him with solace from his affliction in his homeland. He was afflicted with betrayal from his lover with his frivolous childhood friend. Then he fled in search of a new love and a new life, and his faults were revealed to him, which he did not hide. Rather, he decided to confess them to the reader, acknowledging his fragility and selfishness.
